WHAT YOU NEED IN ORDER TO USE IMPACT WEB AUDIO - Basic Edition

BEFORE YOU START
You need a computer with a sound card. If you can hear sounds from your computer, such as the noise Windows makes when it starts and closes, you have a sound card.

You need a microphone. Right now I am using a cheap headset model designed to be used with a phone. Later on, I plan to look into investing in a better mic... and I'll report back to you guys.

The microphone plugs into the sound card of the computer. Generally the plug will be pink (think *Pink Lipstick* or there will be a small microphone icon beside it, or both...

You may have to go into the Windows Control panel and make some adjustments:

Start Menu/Settings/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices

HOW TO START
First, my suggestion is to plan to do this over two evenings, allowing an hour for each night. It is probable that you will be able to get it all done in one evening, but there is no sense in frustrating yourself.

Evening One:

  Install software

Create a Business Audio Folder on your hard drive to store the related files in. This will insure that you don't lose any of them and will also make it easier to back them up!

Make sure your microphone is working - See suggestions above, under the BEFORE YOU START Heading

Write the first draft of your message

Listen to the music loops provided with the Basic Edition and decide which one you want to use.

Evening Two:

  Practice your message.
I read my messages from Notepad from my computer screen. If you are having trouble saying something clearly, re-write the message, substituting words that are easier to say.
For example, I have an easier time starting a message with *Welcome* than I do using the word *Greetings*.

Record your message several times, just for practice. Listen carefully and make sure that there aren't any background noises that you need to deal with, like a noisy printer or a fan...

Now, record your message *for Real*
Don't worry if it takes you several tries. I am getting a lot faster from practice, now that I have recorded several messages.

Now start going thru the rest of the steps. Here are the settings that I use. Yours will be different, depending on the background music loop you choose, but my settings should give you a starting place!

Note - This graphic is NOT an image of my settings, it is just to show you which settings I am telling you about! ;-)

A. Be sure you have the Box checked to use a Background Audio Loop.

B. I have my slider set to under the U in the word Audio

C. Mine is set to 4 seconds - this will vary according to the actual music you choose. Go by how it sounds!

D. My slider is set on the third tick mark from the left.

E. Mine is set to 6 seconds - this will vary according to the actual music you choose. Go by how it sounds!

F. Be sure and check BOTH boxes. This will give you Intro and Outro music before and after your Voice Message

Be sure and write down you final settings. I can guarantee that you won't remember them. Also, remember that you will need to make adjustments whenever you use a different Background Music Loop so allow for the extra time the first time you use a piece of music.

Now, let's go thru the rest of the Steps.

Step 3 - Choose the Player Button layout you like. Adjust the Width, if necessary and choose a color. You can also specify a custom color, if you want. I did that to match the color scheme on the Impact Web Audio sales page. (If you need help with this, leave a post on the Forum!)

Step 4 - You have the option to make the Player start automatically. DO NOT check this box. You do NOT want the Player starting on its own... trust me on this! If you want to know why, ask me about it on the Forum!

If you want to send your visitor to a specific page on your web site, out the URL in the place provided and click the box. Be sure and use a complete URL (http://www.yoursite/thepage.htm)

Step 5 - Be sure and listen to the preview. If you want to make any changes, including re-recording, just click the back button to get to the appropriate step.

Step 6 - Be sure and put a name in the space that says *Project1*. Name it something that you will recognize and be sure there are no spaces in the name (BTW, avoiding spaces in file names is actually a good habit to cultivate)

Put the location of the folder you created the first night into the next space. This will make it MUCH easier for you to find the files AND keep them organized!

   Hit *Save All*

Step 7 - The script provided in this step is what you will insert into your web page, where you want the Player to appear. If you forget to copy it, don't panic. Impact Web Audio put a copy of it in the folder it created. It is in the form of an html page.

NOTE: The folder needs to be in the same location as the page with the player. For instance, on this site, the MembersHome page is in the membersarea/gold folder. The folder for any message on that page will also be in the members/gold folder.

Put the script in your page and the entire folder on your website and you are good to go!

Once you have done it successfully, you will be able to do it VERY quickly, depending on how tongue-tied you are when recording! ;-)

Some Tricks and Hints:

Write out what you are going to say. It doesn't have to be exact, but it should be close.

Practice it several times and figure out where your breathing breaks need to be

If some part of your message seems awkward or hard to say, rewrite it.

Practice speaking SLOWLY and WITH ENERGY... and NO, the two are not mutually exclusive! LOLOL

Using the microphone:

Use a headphone mic - it leaves your hands free to operate the software and you will always be the same distance from the mic so you wont have to worry about volume variations as much.

To avoid distortion, don't put the mic closer than 2 to 3 inches from your mouth during normal speaking. You will have to experiment a little as the distance varies depending on your voice  and your ability to project.

If you decide that you want to use a different Music Loop, there are many available on the web for a small fee. I purchased mine at Opuzz.com for $4.99.

The Audio loops at Opuzz.com are available in two formats:

mp3 and wav

My advice is to download both, since your purchase covers both versions. When using IMPACT WEB AUDIO - Pro, you will be given you choice of which you want to use. I recommend using the mp3 version because it is a MUCH smaller size file! ;-)

Remember, you WILL need to upgrade to IMPACT WEB AUDIO - Pro in order to use this option. The upgrade is about $25 and, in my opinion is worth every penny!
