Favicons - Small but Mighty!
SECTION B
General Information on Favicons
available here.
There is a FREE Online Favicon Generator:
http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/
Here is additional information and more resources.
Some suggestions for using Favicons effectively:
Use the same Favicon for both your Web
Site and your Blog(s). This will give visual continuity as you build
your brand, even though you are using different URLs. (A URL is the
Dot Com name for a site. For example, this site's URL is *yarnandthreaddesigners.com*)
Consider using
a portion of your Company
Logo, rather than trying to reduce a complicated image down to 16
squares by 16 squares.
If you don't have a Company Logo or
don't want to use it, but you do have a distinctive color associated
with your Company, even a simple square of that color would be effective and
eye-catching!

Favicons Step by Step
A Favicon (pronounced fav-eye-con) is 16 pixels by 16 pixels... very
small.
It is a fairly simple process to create one.
STEP 1 - Create the icon
Use a gif, jpg, png, or bmp file. Reduce it in size to about 100
pixels by 100 pixels...
If your logo is too detailed, consider using just a portion of it.
Save the modified file to a location on you computer that you can
easily find again. ;-)
STEP 2 - Go to the FREE Favicon Generator online here:
http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/
Click on the BROWSE link next to the empty form box, directly
underneath the phrase *Image to create icon from:*
This will open a window to the hard drive of your computer. Go to
the file that you saved in Step 1.
Highlight it and click OPEN in the window.
The file location will then show up on the screen for the Favicon
Generator, in that previously empty Forms box.
STEP 3 - Click on the *Create Icon* button beneath the
forms that shows the location of your graphics file.
The screen will change and below the *Create Icon* button, there
should appear a *Favicon (16x16) preview:* box. Scroll below that
you will see a long blue button that says *Download Favicon*.
STEP 4 - Click on the *Download Favicon*. You will get
a small window that says something to the effect that you have chosen
to open a favicon.ico file.
STEP 5 - Click on the Save to Disk option and the
click OK.
Choose a location on your hard drive that you will be able to find
again and hit *Save*
STEP 6 - Follow the information on the Favicon
Generator Page to upload your Favicon and make the changes to the
code on your site.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Sometimes, for reasons I have not been
able to identify, it can take as long as 48 hours before the Favicon
will show up... Go figure!
The file used MUST be called *favicon.ico*
(without the * marks)
The Favicon.ico file is NOT just a
graphic file that has been renamed. It is an entirely DIFFERENT kind
of graphics file.
TINK HINT -
I keep a number of different
favicon files in my system for different websites. I name the files
with descriptive names on my hard drive, such as favicon-chair.ico
so I can tell which is which. I RENAME the file to *favicon.ico*
(without the * marks) when I upload it to the appropriate site.
